Timber joinery sanded, gaps filled, glass masked and edges cut in cleanly.

Fascias, soffits and trims

The high, exposed parts that weather first, prepared and painted with the rest of the house.

Plaster and brick

Washed, cracks repaired and coated with a paint suited to masonry.

House wash

Dirt, mould and salt removed first so the new paint bonds to a clean surface.

How it works

How an exterior job runs

  1. Wash

The house is washed down to remove dirt, mould and salt.

  2. Scrape and sand

Loose and failed paint is taken off and edges feathered smooth.

  3. Prime and fill

Bare timber primed, gaps and holes filled, joints sealed.

  4. Two top coats

Applied in dry weather, working around the sun and the wind.

Built for Wellington wind, sun and salt

Houses here take a beating. Northerlies, southerlies, strong sun and salt air near the harbour and the coast all shorten the life of exterior paint. When paint fails early, it is nearly always because the surface under it was not prepared.

That is why most of our time on an exterior goes into washing, scraping, sanding, priming and filling before the first top coat. On a recent weatherboard restoration we stripped failed paint back to the timber before priming and repainting.

Exterior work depends on the weather. We plan around dry spells, start on the sheltered sides when it is windy, and keep you posted if the forecast changes the schedule.

FAQ

Common questions

When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior?

Late spring through autumn gives the most reliable dry weather, but exteriors can be painted in any settled dry spell. We watch the forecast and plan the job around it.

How long does an exterior repaint take?

Most houses take one to two weeks, depending on size, the condition of the old paint, access and the weather.

Do you need scaffolding?

Single-storey houses can often be done from ladders and trestles. Two-storey houses and steep sites usually need scaffolding or a mobile tower, which we allow for in the quote.

How often should a house be repainted?

It depends on exposure and the quality of the last job. Sunny and coastal sides weather fastest. If paint is chalking, cracking or flaking, it is time.
