Timber needs regular care outdoors

Decks and fences get the worst of the weather: full sun, standing water and foot traffic. Uncoated timber turns grey, then furs, cracks and starts to rot. A coat of stain or oil at the right time keeps water out and adds years to its life.

Stain and oil soak into the timber and wear away gradually, so they are easy to refresh. Paint gives a solid colour and good protection on fences, but on a deck it can peel under foot traffic. We will talk through which suits your timber and how you use it.

We recently restored a tired deck in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt, taking it back to clean timber before recoating.

FAQ

Common questions

Should I stain or paint my deck?

For most decks we recommend a stain or oil. It soaks in, wears gradually and is easy to top up. Paint can peel on a surface that is walked on.

How often does a deck need re-staining?

Typically every one to three years, depending on the product, how much sun it gets and how much it is used.

Can a grey, weathered deck be restored?

Usually, yes. If the boards are sound, cleaning and sanding brings back fresh timber ready for a new coat.

What time of year is best?

Timber needs to be dry, so a settled dry spell is what matters. Spring and autumn are popular because the weather is mild.
